The daughter of former South African Head of State Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related allegations at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the port city of Durban.

The defendant, 43 years old, is being charged over statements she published on digital networks in the past during violent demonstrations in South Africa that followed the arrest of her dad.

A week of disorder in various areas of the country in mid-2021, including plundering and fire-setting, left at least 300 individuals deceased and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of inciting this violence and is charged with charges of incitement to commit terrorism and civil unrest.

Context of the Legal Matter

The protests were focused in the regions of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the former president's detention for ignoring a legal directive to appear as a witness at an inquiry into allegations of corruption while he was serving as president.

The defendant has repeatedly rejected the accusations against her, with her legal representative earlier labelling the prosecution's case as weak.

She has also repeatedly said the charges against her were an effort to address political grievances with her parent after he established his own party and ran against the ANC.

Endorsement and Legal Defense

This was echoed by the foundation, which claimed the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and family-related targeting" against the former president and his family.

A few of supporters from her party, the political party, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other party leaders were present at the court sessions inside.

The defense has maintained that the evidence presented by government lawyers is inadequate and fails to provide compelling evidence for a conviction.

Key Points of the Legal Proceedings

  • Online statements from four years ago form the foundation of the state's case
  • Fatal protests in July 2021 resulted in significant casualties and economic destruction
  • The individual on trial confronts multiple counts of encouragement to public disorder
  • Judicial proceedings are projected to proceed for numerous court sessions

The court case continues as the prosecution and defense present their cases before the court in what is expected to be a closely watched court case with substantial political ramifications for South Africa.
